Wild and domesticated species
The legacy of the past. The Montado of Freixo do Meio is a living system, rich and complex, formed by the relations of thousands of beings from all five kingdoms.
The splendor of the old Portuguese oak forest, a medieval agroforestry system, if not older, resulting in a respectful relationship between nature and man, built over centuries. The beauty and magnificence of the Montado emerge from a symbiotic network of cooperation between multiple species of plants, animals, fungus, and microorganisms. A true inspiration for our community.
Stew & Acorn
We are preserving the right to healthy nutrition and defend food sovereignty as an ethical base and the treasuring of Food as a Common good.
The traditional Meat-Stew from Freixo do Meio is prepared in clay pots by the open fire. This dish recreates the ancestral cuisine and is prepared with our own ingredients.
Acorn for human consumption is the symbol of Montado do Freixo do Meio.
To use the acorn in our diet means having an active impact on the preservation of wildlife and of a unique ecosystem.
Agroforest
With all the challenges we face, the agroforest of dynamic succession (Sintropic Agriculture) created by Ernst Götsch, is the path we chose to experience.
Our project implements the visions of Agroecology, Permaculture, and Food sovereignty through the Agroforestry model as a way to approach the present and build the future.
A path focused on the conservation of ecosystems and sustainable food production, clear of concepts and processes unrelated to the natural systems.
